How many people get disability benefits?

The Social Security Administration has benefits programs for those who are disabled and cannot work. They can help people who are out for a significant amount of time but hope to recover and those who will never work again. This program is larger than many people realize and a lot of individuals can obtain these benefits.

If you’re wondering how many people in the United States have disabilities, the following numbers will not directly answer that question. There are people who have never applied, those who are still working through the process, those who have been denied and appealed the denial and those who do not get the benefits for other reasons. That’s important to note at the risk of skewing the statistics without that perspective.

In any case, there are roughly 8.5 million individuals in the United States who get disabled-worker benefits through this program. There are also 117,000 spouses who get payments on account of a spouse’s disability and 1.5 million children who use these benefits.

These numbers help to show just how important these programs are. Just adding together the disabled workers and the children, you’re already at 10 million people, and you haven’t counted the spouses yet. Naturally, all of these numbers could increase as the years go by and the overall population of the United States continues to climb.

Do you think that you need disability benefits or have you tried to apply and gotten denied? This process can get a bit complex, but you can see how many people make use of it. It may help to work with an experienced team.
